Descriptive Study of Ischemic Heart Disease in Patients with Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract
Coronary artery disease is the leading cause of mortality and morbidity globally. Ischemic Heart Disease (IHD) is one of the most important complications of diabetes mellitus (DM). This study was hospital-based, cross-sectional descriptive study conducted in Ali Abad teaching hospital in Kabul, Afghanistan from October 2023 to March 2024. Total of 223 diabetic patients participated in this study, with mean age of 58.2 ±13.6 years. Among the participants, 159 patients (71.3%) were male, and 64 patients (28.7%) were female. Of these, 14 patients (6.27%) had Type 1 Diabetes (T1DM), and 209 patients (93.72%) had Type 2 Diabetes (T2DM. Stable angina was found in (6.9%) patients, unstable angina was in (29.3%) patients, There were (44.8%) patients with STEMI and (15.5%) with NSTEMI. A history of ischemic heart disease was found in 29 patients (50 %), hypertension (HTN) was present in (37.9%) and 33 patients (56.9%) were smoker, (24.1%) patients had dyslipidemia and (77.6%) patients had psychosocial stress, and 24 patients (10.79%) were physically active Among the participants. Approximately one-fourth of diabetic patients are suffering from IHD.
