Iron Deficiency: A Silent Epidemic with Global Consequences

Keywords: Iron Deficiency, Anemia, Silent Epidemic, Global Health

Mohammad Naseer Naseri

Abstract

Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional disorder worldwide, affecting approximately 1.2 billion people. This issue represents a silent epidemic with profound multidimensional consequences for health and socio-economic development, making a comprehensive examination of its various aspects essential. This review study aims to comprehensively analyze the different dimensions of iron deficiency, including its pathophysiology, epidemiology, risk factors, clinical manifestations, diagnostic challenges, and contemporary management strategies. A literature search was conducted in scientific databases, including PubMed and Google Scholar, for articles published between 2015 and 2024. The primary focus was on systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and clinical guidelines to synthesize the existing evidence. The findings indicate that Iron Deficiency Without Anemia (IDWA) is a hidden stage of the disorder that is often overlooked, despite being associated with significant complications such as cognitive impairment, reduced productivity, diminished quality of life, and weakened immune function. Diagnosing this condition is often challenging due to the non-specific nature of symptoms and limitations of conventional laboratory tests. Furthermore, gastrointestinal side effects of oral iron supplements and unequal access to healthcare services complicate clinical management in many regions worldwide. Effective management requires an integrated and multi-level approach. A successful response to this silent epidemic depends on the implementation of targeted screening in high-risk groups, evidence-based nutritional education, large-scale food fortification programs, and the utilization of novel, better-tolerated iron formulations. Such integrated interventions are crucial for reducing the global prevalence of iron deficiency and improving health indicators and the quality of life for individuals and communities.
