Abstract
This review examined the role of digital platforms in enhancing the public outreach of over-the-counter (OTC) medications in a similar context, with potential implications for Afghanistan. The study aimed to explore strategies that enhance public outreach, promote safer consumption, and improve health outcomes in the county. The study identified effective digital approaches, explored community engagement techniques, and evaluated educational approaches to assess their impact on public knowledge and attitudes towards OTC medicines usage. To meet the goal, a systematic methodology was employed, including an inclusive deep literature search across multiple databases, resulting in the inclusion of 27 relevant studies. Key findings indicated that digital platforms, including social media, play an important role in disseminating health information and engaging communities. However, challenges such as misinformation, disinformation, and varying levels of health literacy hinder effective communication. The review emphasized the importance of targeted educational initiatives that address knowledge gaps and promote responsible self-medication usage. Recommendations include leveraging social media for health education, collaborating with healthcare professionals, and implementing strategies to combat misinformation and disinformation. By synthesizing existing literature, the definitive aim of this study was to provide actionable insights for healthcare authorities and organizations to enhance public outreach regarding OTC medications. Ultimately, the findings highlighted the importance of utilizing digital platforms to enhance health knowledge and empower individuals in making informed health decisions, ultimately leading to improved health outcomes in Afghanistan.
